LA Academy is a learning center academy whose ideas were birthed in the summer of 2011 to combat the staggering statistics which show that a large percent of boys are routinely diagnosed with some type of learning deficiency. Expectations of their academic success are often lowered by the schools, and they are given educational plans that mirror those lower expectations, which in turn tends to produce a change in lowering a child's self-worth, personal goals or achievement. If the student is not reading at grade level by the4th grade, he is most likely to fall behind in all subjects, and become the most probable high school drop out. Statistics show that 75 percent of state prison inmates and 59 percent of federal inmates are high-school dropouts.
At LA Academy, we have found that most boys can become good to excellent students within small class sizes, a rigorous curriculum, and an environment that has high expectations of them. As an all boys academy, we provide an environment that draws upon the natural talents and strengths of boys, such creativeness, perseverance, competiveness and camaraderie to enhance their learning experience.
Therefore, the guiding principle of LA Academy is: "If we teach students to read and comprehend on grade level, they will be successful and our school will be successful." LA Academy believes that small learning center size and small class sizes are essential to the success for both students and the LA Academy staff, because it produces minimal distractions and stress. LA Academy accomplishes its mission by creating learning centers with the following attributes: 1) Maximum 10:1 ratio class size 2) Maximum learning center size of 60 students 3) Phonics based reading foundations 4) Stimulate the student Cognitively, Creatively, Physically, Emotionally and Socially.
